Trying to stay in baseball, Alan created THE GREENSBORO BATTING CENTER and the rest is history.

The Greensboro Batting Center is one of the longest running indoor baseball/softball practice facility in the country. Please go to greensborobatting.com for more information including a look at our Hall Of Fame to see what college and professional players have trained at The Greensboro Batting Center over 25 years. RETRO PIRATES 13U TAKES TITLE IN SEPTEMBER SIZZLER

Pirates Sept. Sizzler 2011 042

The 13U Greensboro Retro Pirates won the September Sizzler Baseball tournament held at Deep River Park in High Point NC. The Pirates, coached by Tony Nusdeo, John Olszewski, Chris Patrick, and Shane Lyons put it all together this past weekend to bring home the gold for the 1st time this Fall.

After a slow start on saturday during pool play, 3-2 and 10-3 losses, the Pirates were forced to play 3 games on Sunday to win the tournament.  After playing the late game on saturday night and finishing at 10:30pm the Pirates had to play the dreaded 9am Sunday morning game against the Kernersville Giants. It wasn’t much of a contest from the start as they jumped to an early lead and never looked back with a 14-1 victory. Led by the pitching of Cameron Lyons and Trevor Patrick, who combined for a 2-hitter. The Pirates blasted 13 hits total led by Patrick Callaghan, John Meeks, Lucas Olszewski, Brian Beckham, and Johordan Davis who had 2 hits a piece and Matthew Nusdeo had a 3 run triple to put the game out of reach.

They advanced to the semifinals against a tough Tops Baseball team. The Pirates jumped out front again as pitchers Davis and Danny Graves combined for the win while Nusdeo banged out 2 hits and Graves exploded for a 3 hit, 3 RBI, 3 run game that included an HR. Trey Ragan made some beautiful plays at second base to preserve the win.The Pirates advanced to the finals with a decisive 11-4 win.

The final game pitted the Pirates against the Greensboro Batting Center. This promised to be a hard fought game. The Pirates again jumped out to a big 6-0 early lead before some fireworks from the opposing team were set off as their coach was asked to leave the ball park after some accessive arguing. GBC did come back to make it 6-4 at one point. But there was no stopping the Pirates on this day. Lyons started the game on the bump with some gutsy pitching and gave way to Davis who got stronger on the hill as the day got long. The bats were on fire again as they banged out 13 hits again led by Davis’ 3 hits ( 10-15 on the weekend)and 4RBI and Lyons, Beckham, and Graves had 2 hits a piece. Jeremy Weaver had 3 RBI and  Olszewski chipped in with 2 RBI.Danny Graves came in the last inning to close out the championship game as the Pirates routed GBC 13-4.

The whole team contributed to this championship and the parents and coaches are very proud of how each one of them played their hearts out and always showed class and sportmanship while they were on and off the field at Deep River Park.

Great job Pirates!!!

Miss Babe Ruth Statue Vandalized, Stolen

Grasshoppers offer $1,000 reward for apprehension of thief

GREENSBORO The Miss Babe Ruth statue, located at the southeast corner of NewBridge Bank Park, was stolen over the weekend, according to Greensboro Grasshoppers President and General Manager Donald Moore.

Since June 2008, the likeness of the popular Labrador retriever has sat next to the bench with a smiling Guilford the Grasshopper likeness.

“It is really sad that someone would steal the statue of Babe,” said Moore. “At every game, kids clamor to sit on that bench with Babe and Guilford. It adds such a classy touch to an already beautiful ballpark with our two most recognizable mascots sitting there,” Moore continued. “People come from far and wide to have their pictures taken. It is a sad day for our community.’

The fiberglass, life-size statue was custom-made by Fun Enterprises, LLC, of Beachwood, Ohio, and was bolted four inches into concrete.

“It was clearly a malicious act of vandalism, as her paws are still intact. We are already moving forward with having the statue replaced, but, unfortunately, it will take weeks, if not months to get a new one made. In the interim, we want to find the person who stole the statue, and we’re willing to pay $1,000 for information leading to the thief’s arrest and conviction,” Moore continued.

The Grasshoppers open a seven game home stand tonight, ironically with Master Yogi Berra’s Bark in the Park, dog owners are encouraged to bring their pooches to the game.  Please visit www.gsohoppers.com or call (336) 268-2255 for additional information.

RETRO PIRATES USE PITCHING, DEFENSE AND TIMELY HITTING FOR 2ND PLACE FINISH

PiratesJune19th2011 (5)

The 12U Retro Pirates put it all together this past weekend to challenge for a Championship in USSSA play. After winning 2 games on saturday in pool play to qualify for a 2 seed in the 11 team tourney, they came up a little short in the championship game on Sunday.

The Pirates used some terrific pitching backed by some flawless defense to pull out  4-3 and 6-4 wins on Saturday. The pitching from Matthew Nusdeo, Trevor Patrick, Lucas Olszewski,Kyle McKinney and Cameron Lyons led the way for the improving Pirates. The defense was led by Brian Beckham, Trey Ragan, Conner Carlin, Jack Maginnes, and Billy Osteen. Lyons hit his 1st roundtripper of the season over the right field fence to lead the offense.

The two wins on saturday placed the Pirates in the semifinals on Sunday against the High Point Heat. The Pirates came out firing on all cylinders in a 9-0 rout to reach the finals for the 1st time this season. Ace hurler Lucas Olszewski pitched a one hitter with no walks for the complete game shutout. The defense was spectacular again with the play of the weekend was made by Brian Beckham with a diving catch in center and then he threw out the runner on 1st for an ESPN double play. The Heat did not have a runner reach 2nd base the whole game. The offense was led by Matthew Nusdeo as he launched a mammoth home run over the 220 mark in left center.

The Pirates lost to the powerful Carolina Reds in the title game in a hard fought 8-6 loss.

The Pirates had some nice timely hitting all weekend by McKinney, Osteen, Maginnes, and Carlin.

Great weekend and great work to the Retro Pirates.

Brebbia Named SoCon Pitcher of the Year, Three Earn All-SoCon Honors From Media

5/24/2011

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Elon junior right-handed pitcher John Brebbia was recognized as the 2011 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned first-team All-Southern Conference accolades from the league’s media members on Tuesday.  Also honored with second-team all-league distinction were senior shortstop Neal Pritchard and freshman second baseman Sebastian Gomez.

Brebbia becomes the second Elon pitcher to claim SoCon Pitcher of the Year honors, joining 2008 honoree Steven Hensley.

Brebbia was a perfect 7-0 on the season with a 1.83 ERA in 39.1 innings of work, holding opponents to a .152 batting average. A Chatham, Mass. native, Brebbia fanned 35 batters against only eight walks.  He also notched three saves.  He was even better in SoCon play, surrendering just three earned runs in 27.2 innings, which was good enough for a 0.98 ERA.

Pritchard earned the second all-league accolade of his career after hitting .306 with eight doubles, a triple, eight homers and 39 RBI for the SoCon regular season champion Phoenix.  Against league competition, the Asheboro, N.C. native batted .340 with five doubles, one triple, six home runs and 27 RBI.  The 27 RBI rated eighth in the league in conference contests as did his six long balls.

Gomez, a native of Miramar, Fla., ranked in a tie for 10th in SoCon-only games with a .359 batting average and fifth with a .463 on-base percentage on his way to garnering the first all-league honor of his career.  Overall this season, Gomez leads the Phoenix with a .318 batting average.  In 47 games, he also has scored 30 times, has six doubles, a triple, two homers, 27 RBI and is a perfect 14-for-14 in stolen base attempts.

The Phoenix will open its quest for the 2011 SoCon Tournament title on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. against eighth-seeded Western Carolina.

Southwest Holds off East 3-2, Orth rushed to hospital

Zach Scudder crushes double against SW Guilford

Matt Orth ready to deliver against East Forsyth

It was a perfect night weatherwise for baseball as the Southwest Cowboys beat East Forsyth 3-2. It was a battle of two very good ball clubs. Super Soph Matt Orth started for the Cowboys and was in a groove as he struck out the side in the 1st inning. Orth then homered in the bottom half of the inning to put the Cowboys up 2-0.

Orth then took a line drive to the head in the 3rd inning that delayed the game about 45 minutes. It was a liner that hit him above the eye and scraped across his ear. Paramedics arrived and rushed him to the hospital. The game continued with all thoughts of Matt and his family.

Orth ended up 2-2, homer and double. East Forsyth Slugger Zach Scudder crushed 2 doubles in the losing cause.
