The Carolina Dynamo are hosting the South Atlantic Division Championship
game this Tuesday, July 26th vs. rival Northern Virginia.  Any kid (18 &
under) who wears their youth soccer jersey receives free admission. This
is a great opportunity for your kids to see the highest level of soccer in
the Triad.  Should the Dynamo win Tuesday, we will travel to Long Island,
NY for the Eastern Conference Final Four.  If we advance through and win
the Eastern Conference we have a very good chance of hosting the PDL Final
Four, which is nationally televised on FSC.  One thing that will help
guarantee we receive that home bid and the televised game is all the local
support we can get on Tuesday.  Let’s pack the house and help the Dynamo
advance to the next round and potentially host the PDL National Final

Dynamo Feature Local Flare Friday Night

Includes Two Veteran Players & Seven with local Club Ties

Greensboro, NC:  The Carolina Dynamo take on the Fredericksburg Hotspur tomorrow at Macpherson Stadium, the first ever matchup between the two franchises.  On Friday, the Dynamo will feature a pair of local veteran talents along with seven players with local ties.  Robinson will start in the net for the Dynamo on Friday, with Spooner expecting to see action up top.  Chris previously played with the Dynamo in the 2002 & 2003 seasons appearing in 35 games.  After playing with the Dynamo, Chris went onto to play with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and both the New England Revolution & Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.  Chris currently coaches with both Greensboro United and NC Soccer Fusion.

Ian Spooner is the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Greensboro College and brings some six seasons of professional experience, playing for Roanoke, Wilmington, and Virginia Beach of the USL.  Spooner played college soccer at Radford and was a four time All-Conference selection, being named Big South Player of the year his last two seasons.  Spooner currently coaches three boys’ teams with Greensboro United.  “We are very excited to have both Robinson & Spooner on the field this weekend, not only have they brought a wealth of experience to the team in training they also are teaching the younger players how to become future professionals”, says Dynamo Coach Marc Nicholls. 

Joining Robinson & Spooner on the field this weekend are seven players with local ties, having played both club and high School Soccer here locally in the Triad, including Robbie Lovejoy (Page H.S. & Triangle United), Jonathan Campbell (NC Soccer Fusion & Greensboro Day School), Freddy Gomez (Greensboro Soccer Club & Williams HS.), Jonathan Leonard (Greensboro Soccer Club & Grimsley H.S.), Luciano Delbono (Twin City Soccer Club), Mark Millard (Greensboro Soccer Club & Northwest H.S.), Matt Sarett (Greensboro Soccer Club).  “The numerous youth clubs in the Triad have done a tremendous job of developing talent.  The Dynamo envision ourselves as the top of the player development pyramid for all the local youth clubs. Including home grown players on the squad is definitely a priority for our Club”, says Dynamo GM Scott Zapko.

DYNAMO OPEN CUP MATCH UP ANNOUNCED

Greensboro, NC:  The United States Soccer Federation has unveiled the
first round pairings for the 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The 98th edition
of the tournament kicks off on Tuesday, June 14 with all 32 lower division
teams competing.
The draw was determined by dividing the teams geographically into eight
groups of four in an effort to limit travel costs. Once the groups were
determined, a blind draw determined the match-ups. The first three rounds
will take place in consecutive weeks, with the Second Round scheduled for
June 21, followed by the Third Round on June 28. The eight lower division
teams that advance beyond the first and second rounds, will each play one
of the eight qualified teams from Major League Soccer in Round 3,
scheduled for June 28.

The Carolina Dynamo just one of four PDL teams to host a first round match
will face USL Pro side and long time rival the Charlotte Eagles on
Tuesday, June 14th.  Kick-off is slated for 7:00 at Macpherson Stadium.
All tickets for the game will be general admission at just $5/ticket.

The US Open Cup is the national championship for the United States and has
crowned a champion every year since 1914, making it the second oldest
continuously run cup competition in the world. The single-elimination
tournament is open to teams from every level of American soccer from local
rec leagues to the best from Major League Soccer. The winner of the 2011
competition wins $100,000 and a place in the 2012 CONCACAF Champions
League. The runner-up wins $50,000 and the team that advances the furthest
among the two lower divisions, Division III (USL Pro) and Amateur (PDL,
NPSL, USASA) will each win $10,000.

DYNAMO ANNOUNCE NEW HEAD COACH

Greensboro, NC:  Today the Carolina Dynamo announced Marc Nicholls as the
clubs new Head Coach.  Marc becomes the sixth head coach in the clubs 19
year history.  “I’m very excited to have a coach of Marc’s caliber lead
the Dynamo in the next chapter of the Dynamo’s storied history.  Marc is a
proven leader on and off the field, and has an extensive history of
working with high level players”, says Dynamo GM Scott Zapko.

Marc also joins the Dynamo staff for his second stint having served as an
assistant coach for two seasons. Marc joined Greensboro Youth Soccer as
Technical Director in 2005 and is also the Director of Coaching for the US
Soccer Developmental Academy with North Carolina Fusion.  Prior to coming
to Greensboro Nicholls spent six years with New Orleans Soccer Academy
(NOSA) and three years with the Roanoke Star as their Director of
Coaching. NOSA enjoyed unprecedented success during his tenure, achieving
multiple State and Regional titles. The foundation he developed in Roanoke
continues today with the growth of the club and development of many
players who have gone on to achieve success at the collegiate and national
team level.

Marc has been involved in youth soccer for over 15 years, including a
stretch in England, before arriving in the USA in 1997. He has since
worked with the Louisiana, Virginia and North Carolina Olympic Development
Programs as well as being a Coach Educator with the various State
Associations. On the upcoming season with the Dynamo Nicholls stated, “I
am very excited to being the Dynamo Head Coach and being part of a new era
with the club. The Dynamo has a long and storied history and with the
nearby college resources and the emerging local talent we have the
potential to be very good. Our fans want to see entertaining soccer and
that is what we will be looking to provide”.

Marc graduated from Liverpool JM University with a BA Honors degree in
History. He played soccer at both the County and University level in
England before embarking on a career in coaching. Marc holds the FA of
England Preliminary Badge, the National Soccer Coaches of America
Association Premier Diploma and the United States Soccer Federation “A”
License. Marc has won numerous coach of the year awards including being
named US Soccer Developmental Academy Coach of the Year in 2010, and was
recently selected as one of 30 coaches nationwide to attend the
prestigious FIFA Futuro III coaching course in Casa Grande, AZ.

THREE DYNAMO PLAYERS SELECTED IN THE 2011 MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER SUPERDRAFT

Baltimore, Maryland:  Today two former Carolina Dynamo players were
selected in the first round of the 2011 Major League Soccer Superdraft.
Jalil Anibaba, and Eddie Ababio teammates from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill were selected as the #9 & #18 picks respectively.
In the 2nd round another Tar Heel player, Stephen McCarthy was selected as
the #24 overall pick.

Jalil Anibaba was selected  as the #9 overall pick by the Chicago Fire.
Last season with the Dynamo Jalil started as a central defender in all 12
matches he appeared in.  Anibaba was also named the most valuable player
earlier this week at the MLS combine.

Eddie Ababio was selected as the #18 overall pick  and the last of the
first round by the Colorado Rapids.  Eddie played for the Dynamo from
2007-2009 sitting out the entire 2010 season with an injury.  During his
time with the Dynamo Ababio appeared in 27 games as both a defender and
forward scoring 11 goals while assisting on another four.

Stephen McCarthy was selected as the #6 pick in the 2nd round and the 24th
overall pick by the New England Revolution.  Last season with the Dynamo
Stephen saw action in nine games while fighting an injury.  Stephen still
managed to finish fourth on the Dynamo in points off four goals and one
assist.

 Dynamo Coach/Executive Steps Down

Greensboro, NC:  Today the Carolina Dynamo announced Dynamo Head Coach &
Vice President, Joe Brown is leaving the club in order to pursue other
opportunities.  Brown is the CEO/President of US Futbol Training located
in Delaware.  In 2002, Coach Brown was inducted in the USL Hall of Fame
and named USL D-3 Pro League executive of the year.  Brown coached the
Dynamo for 11 years and leaves the club as the leader in all time wins,
compiling a record of 116-61-14.  Brown’s teams won two regular season
National Championships (2003 & 2006), and countless divisional titles.
Prior to joining the Dynamo Brown owned and coached the Delaware Wizards
compiling a record of 49-37-11.  Browns overall record in USL is
165-99-26.  “It is obviously bitter-sweet that I leave the Dynamo” says
Brown.  “I’d like to thank all the local soccer clubs, corporate partners
as well as Neil Macpherson (Dynamo founder) for their support over the
years.  I’ve made many of life-long friends and relationships during my
time in Greensboro and the Dynamo will always have a special place in my
heart,” Brown goes onto add.   Dynamo GM Scott Zapko says, “We’ll miss Joe
Brown on many levels as he is a top notch soccer coach and executive. He
has done wonders to help promote soccer here in the Triad during his time
with the Dynamo.   He will always be part of the Dynamo tradition of
excellence. With that being said, it is business as usual for the Dynamo.
We continue to bring affordable family entertainment and a high level of
soccer to the Piedmont.  As for a coach, we have several in mind but don’t
plan on hiring one until after the Holidays,” Zapko continues.

Joe Brown Bio:
Coach Brown has over 25 years of coaching experience at most levels in the
United States. Brown leaves the Dynamo having coached a total of 15
seasons in the USL, eleven with the Carolina Dynamo and four with the
Delaware Wizards. During his stint with Delaware he lead the Wizards to
three Northeast Divisional Finals and was selected Atlantic Division Coach
of the year in 1993. In 1999, the Carolina Dynamo advanced further than
any other D3 team in the Lamar Hunt US OPEN CUP before bowing out of the
tournament to the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.

In 2000, Brown was appointed Head Coach of the Region 1 team that competed
in The US Soccer Festival. In 2002, Coach Brown was inducted in the USL
Hall Of Fame and named USL executive of the year. In 2003, the Carolina
Dynamo won the USL Pro Select League Regular season championship and Brown
was selected as Pro Select League Coach of the Year. He has been a staff
coach for Delaware and Maryland’s Olympic
Development Programs. Prior to his years in the USL, Brown coached at the
Junior college level at Delaware Tech for two seasons. His Spirit teams
where ranked in the NJCAA top 20 both seasons and in 1991 the team reached
a high record ranking 10th in the Nation. Brown spent ten years coaching
in the high school level at A.I. DuPont High School in Greenville,
Delaware, winning four Blue Hen conference titles and competing in the
state playoffs for eight seasons, including four state semi-final
appearances. Brown holds an “A” license from the United States Soccer
Federation. In June of 2005, with a 6-2 victory over Raleigh CASL Elite,
Brown broke the record for the most wins in the Club’s history.

In 2006, Brown led the Carolina Dynamo to an undefeated PDL regular season
national championship, only the seventh team to accomplish this in the
21-year history of United Soccer Leagues. The 2006 the Dynamo advanced
further than any PDL team in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with the victories
over Cape Cod, Richmond Kickers (USL-2), Seattle Sounders (USL-1), before
losing to the Houston Dynamo of MLS. Brown was selected PDL Coach of the
Year in 2006.

In 2006 and 2007 the Dynamo won back to back South Atlantic division
titles and in 2007 the Dynamo reached the National quarterfinals in the

Elon Keeper Honored as League Player of the Week; Phoenix to Battle West Virginia
 
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon senior goalkeeper Clint Irwin was selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for all matches from September 27-October 3. The net-minder racked up 16 saves in nearly 217 minutes of action as Elon stretched its unbeaten streak to seven consecutive contests.
 
Irwin tied his career single-game high with nine saves as Elon played the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils to a 1-1 draw in a mid-week non-conference showdown. The Charlotte, N.C. native followed that with his 22nd career shutout as the Phoenix defeated UNC Greensboro, 1-0, in double overtime on Saturday to remain undefeated in league play. Elon has now beaten UNCG in the last three meetings. With the shutout, Irwin moved to fourth on the SoCon’s career shutout list, just one spot away from third place.
 
With a record of 4-2-3, Elon moved into the South Regional rankings for the first time this season, ranking eighth on the list. SoCon foes College of Charleston (4th) and Davidson (10th) also earned spots on the regional list.
 
The Phoenix will host the West Virginia Mountaineers (5-3-1) on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field. WVU, who is receiving votes in the national poll, had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 loss at Georgetown. Elon and West Virginia met for the first time last season, playing to a 1-1 tie in Morgantown.

Elon’s Irwin Named to 2010 Hermann Trophy Watch List

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Elon senior goalkeeper Clint Irwin is among the 39 men’s soccer players who have been named to the 2010 Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy watch list. Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipients of the MAC’s Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I soccer coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). A list of 15 semifinalists is selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. Irwin is the lone Southern Conference player on the list.
 
“This is great recognition for Clint and for our program,” commented Elon head coach Darren Powell. “To be considered one of the best players in the country prior to the season is an honor, but knowing Clint’s attitude, he will continue to try and be the best he can in every game which is what put him in this position. We hope Clint will lead this team to another successful season.”
 
Irwin has been rewriting the Elon record books since he donned the maroon and gold. The native of Charlotte, N.C. already owns a spot on every one of Elon’s career record lists. After earning a 2-0 shutout against College of Charleston in the semifinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament, Irwin moved into a tie for first place with 19 career shutouts. His 10 clean slate performances last season were also the most-ever in a single season at Elon. Allowing only 18 goals, Irwin boasted a 0.88 goals against average (GAA) last season, a mark that topped the league and ranked 44th in the country. The goalie was named first-team All-SoCon and first-team NSCAA All-South Region while leading the Phoenix to an appearance in the conference championship game.
 
Irwin has been an all-conference selection in each of his three years at Elon and helped the Phoenix to the regular-season Southern Conference title in 2008. Along with fellow co-captains Brad Franks and James Carroll, Irwin and the 2010 squad will begin their quest for another conference crown on Wednesday, September 1 when they travel to High Point for a 7 p.m. match.
